Kamakura has several different charms. The rich history of 800 years is one of them.

734 Sugimoto Temple is believed to be completed
736 Hase Temple is believed to be completed
1051 The Rebellion of the Abe Family rose (and ended in 1062) .
1083 The Rebellion of the Kiyohara Family rose (and ended in 1087) .
1129 Retired emperor Shirakawa died and cloistered ruling by Emperor Toba started .
1156 Retired emperor Toba died and the battle between the imperial families and their allied regency families occurred.
1158 Cloistered ruling by Emperor Go-Shirakawa started .
1159 The battle between Taira Kiyomori and Minamoto Yoshitsune occurred.(Battle of Heiji) ( Minamoto Family was defeated and declined thereafter while Taira family accomplished the dominant power over the court.)
1160 Minamoto Yoshitsune was killed and Minamoto Yoritomo was banished to Izu Island.
1167 Taira Kiyomori received the title of Dajo-Daijin (but retired in short time and entered priesthood in 1168)
1180 Minamoto Yorimasa and Prince Mochihito raised the army in April.
Minamoto Yoritomo raised the army in August. Minamoto Yoshinaka raised the army in September. Minamoto Yoritomo created Samurai -dokoro.
1181 Taira Kiyomori died from the illness. Nationwide famine struck.
1184 Minamoto Yoshinaka was killed in the Battle of Ichi no tani.
Minamoto Yoritomo established the Kumonjo and the Monchujo in Kamakura.
1185 Taira family was exterminated in the last naval battle between the Minamoto Family and the Taira Family at Dan no Ura. Shugo and Jito were established.
1186 Shizuka Gozen was captured and sent to Kamakura.
1187 Minamoto Yoshitsune escaped to Ou in northern Japan.
1188 Minamoto Yoritomo conquered Ou.
1189 Minamoto Yoshitsune was killed by Fujiwara Yasuhira. Yoritomo started the erection of Eifuku Temple.
1191 Eisai brought back Zen of Rinzai sect from China.
1192 Minamoto Yoritomo received the title of Seii TaiShogun. Retired emperor Go-Shirakawa died .
1193 Yoritomo killed Noriyori in Izu.
1195 Yoritomo occupied Kyoto and participated in the mass for praying for rebuilding Todai Temple
1199 Minamoto Yoritomo died and Minamoto Yoriie succeeded his place.
1200 Jufuku Temple was erected at the command of Hojo Masako.
1202 Minamoto Yoriie received the title of Shogun. Eisai established Kennin Templ
1203 Hiki Yoshikazu and Minamoto Yoriie contrived and failed to overthrow the Hojo Family .Minamoto Sanetomo received the title of Shogun and Hojo Tokimasa became his regent.
1204 Minamoto Yoriie was killed.
1205 Hojo Yoshitoki succeeded the position of regent
1212 "Hojoki" was written.
1213 "Kinkon Wakashu" was compiled.
1215 Hojo Tokimasa died . Eisai died.
1219 Minamoto Sanetomo was stabbed to death by his nephew Kugyo at Tsurugaoka Hochiman-gu Shrine.
1220 "Gukansho" was written.
1221 The Rebellion of Jokyu rose. The Bakufu army occupied Kyoto and set Rokuhara Tandai .
1223 The rates for owning manor by Jito was enacted.
1224 Hojo Yoshitoki died. Hojo Yasutoki succeeded regency, Hojo Tokifusa became Rensho, the assistant of the regent. (The starting of Rensho System)
1226 Fujiwara Yoritsune received the title of Shogun.
1232 The basic code of the Bakufu, Goseibai-shikimoku was promulgated. Wagae Island Port was opened.
1234 Senju-nenbutsu was prohibited by imperial proclamation.
1239 Retired emperor Go-Toba died. "Shin-Chokusen Waka-shu" was compiled.
1241 Kamakura was hit by great earthquake.
1242 Hojo Yasutoki died. Hojo Tsunetoki succeeded regency.
1243 The giant statue of Buddha of Kamakura was completed.
1244 Fujiwara Yoritsugu received the title of Shogun. Dogen established Daibutsu Temple ( Eiheiji Temple).
1246 Hojo Tokiyori succeeded regency.
1251 Kamakura experienced great fire.
1252 Shogun Yoritsugu was overthrown and Prince Munetaka became Shogun (the start of imperial Shogun). "Jikkinsho" was written.
1253 Nichiren preached in Kamakura. Dogen died. Kencho Temple was erected.
1256 Hojo Nagatoki succeeded regency. Hojo Masakura became Rensho.
1260 "Rissho Ankoku Ron" was completed.
1261 The Bakufu banished Nichiren to Ito in Izu Island.
1263 Nichiren was released. Hojo Tokiyori died.
1264 Hojo Masamura succeeded regency, Hojo Tokimune became Rensho. Hojo Nagatoki died.
1265 "Zoku-kokin Waka-shu" was compiled.
1266 Prince Munetaka was overthrown and Prince Koreyasu became Shogun.
1268 Emissaries from Mongol came to Dazaifu. Hojo Munetoki succeeded regency and Hojo Muramasa became Rensho. Nichiren wrote to Tokimune accusing other sects and warning the invasion of Mongol.
1271 The Bakufu banished Nichiren to Sado Island.
1272 The Bakufu compelled the lords to submit Ota-bumi.
1273 Hojo Muramasa died. Hojo Yoshimasa became Rensho.
1274 Nichiren was released. Nichiren established Minobu-san Kuon-ji Temple. Mongolians attempted to invade Japan (Bunei War).
1275 The Mongolian emissaries were executed by the Bakufu.
1276 Government ordered samurais in Kyushu to construct stone fortification along the Hakata Bay.
1278 "Hitano Tenjin Jingi" was written.
1279 Mugaku Sogen fled to Japan. (The fall of Southern Sung)
1281 Mongolians attempted to invade Japan.(Koan War)
1282 Nichiren died. Enkaku-ji Temple was erected.
1283 Hojp Naritoki became Rensho.
1284 Hpjp Tokimune died. Hojo Sadatoki succeeded regency
1285 Adachi Yasumori died in the Shimotsuki Disturbance. Tokei-ji Temple was founded.
1286 Mugaku Sogen died.
1287 Hojo Naritoki died. Hojo Nobutoki became Rensho.
1289 Prince Hisaaki became Shogun.
1293 Chinzei Tandai was established. Taira Yoritsuna was killed by Hojo Sadatoki in the Heizen Gate Incident.
1295 Hojo Sanemasa became Chinzei Tandai
1296 Enkaku-ji Temple was erected.
1297 Tokusei-rei, Act of Grace, was promulgated.
1298 The stone fortification along the Hakata Bay was completed.
1299 Chinzei Hyotei-shu and Chinzei Hikituke-shu were established.
1301 Hojo Morotoki succeeded regency. Hojo Tokimura became Rensho. Hojo Sadatoki entered priesthood.
1303 "Shin-gosen Waka-shu" was compiled.
1305 Hojo Tokimura was killed.
1308 Imperial Shogun, Prince Hisaaki was overthrown and Prince Morikuni became Shogun.
1310 Kamakura experienced great fire.
1311 Hojo Munenobu succeeded regency. Hojo Horitoki became Rensho.
1312 "Gyokuyo Waka-shu" was compiled.
1313 Retired Emperor Fushimi handed over his position to the Retired Emperor Go-Fushimi .
1315 Hojo Mototoki became regent. Kanazawa Sadaaki became Rensho.
1316 Hojo Takatoki succeeded regency.
1320 "Zoku Sensai Waka-shu" was compiled.
1321 Cloistered ruling was abolished and the emperor regained the concentrated power over the government.
1324 Shochu Disturbance occurred.
1325 Kenchoji-sen, a merchant ship was sent to Yuan. "Shokugo Shui Waka-shu" was compiled.
1326 Hojo Moriaki became regent soon after Kanazawa Sadaaki . Daibutsu Koresada became Rensho.
1327 Revolt occurred in Yezo, or Hokkaido.
1330 Hojo Shigetoki became Rensho.
1331 Hino Toshimoto and his followers were arrested by the Bakufu (Kogen Disturbance). The Bakufu supported Emperor Kogen. Musunoki Masashige raised an army.
1332 The Bakufu banished Emperor Go-Daigo to Oki Island and Emperor Kogen acceded to the throne. Prince Morinaga raised an army in Yoshino.
1333 Rokuhara Tandai was abolished. Kamakura Bakufu was destroyed by the attack of Nitta Yoshisada. Hojo Takatoki killedhimself. The Hojo Family was exterminated. Chinzei Tandai was abolished.
Kiroku-sho, Zasso ketsudan-sho, and musha-sho were established. Kitabatake Akiie supported Prince Yoshinaga and conquered northern Japan, Ou while Ashikaga Tadayoshi supported Prince Narinaga and guarded Kamakura.
1334 Kenmu Restoration
1335 Ashikaga Tadayoshi killed Prince Narinaga and Takauji raised a revolt. Kitabatake Akiie received the title of Shogun. Ashikaga Takauji defeated Nitta Yoshisada.
1336 Ashikaga Takauji supported Retired Emperor Komyo and set up the Bakufu with Ko Moronao as Shitsuji or ministrant Kenmu Shikimoku or Kenmu Code was promulgated.
1338 Kitabatake Akiie was defeated and died. Nitta Yoshisada was defeated and died. Ashikaga Takauji received the title of Seii-TaiShogun.
1339 Emperor Go-Daigo died. Tenryu-ji Temple was erected.
1342 The Bakufu chose Kamakura Gozan or five great Zen temples in Kamakura.
1351 Ko Moronao and Moroyasu were killed.
1358 Ashikaga Yoshiakira received the title of Shogun.
1868 Decree of separation of Shinto and Buddhism was issued.
1887 Kamakura-gu Shrine was erected.
1889 Yokosuka Line was opened to traffic.
1902 Eno-den was opened to traffic.
